Front cover Alternate design

Here is an experimental design for the front cover, however i think this may not echo the correct genre. This  cover seems too 'pink floyd' for the type of imagery appropriate for the sound.

Coloured T-shirts

As my storyboard includes different main characters for different sections, i had the idea of using coloured t-shirts to distinguish them as singulars.

I have chosen these three colours:
Blue/purple (indigo lights relevance-  lead singer will wear this)
Red (the competition character)
Yellow (neutral, happy)

The colours are quite separate from each other in the spectrum which means they will contrast well together and also emit  a personality...
Red=Anger, danger
Blue/purple=Neutral, stereotypical male colour
Yellow=Happy, loving

Possible backgrounds

Here is a picture i took whilst thinking about the indigo/blue colour scheme, this could be used for the inner side of the CD case as a background.

Album cover plan (may change)- Preliminary task 1

The object in the bottom right is meant to be a searchlight (just a rough plan) lighting up the band name , the album name will be printed on the back of this, this implies that this is the new thing everyone has been looking for, there is also another light facing away from them, however this light will be cracked and old looking, this represents the dull past (the light would at one point have been lightin up something different). I gave the image a texture to look like it was on some sort of wall, like flyers or graffiti.

Title 'Indigo lights'-'??????????????????'

i had an idea for a possible name for the album cover or tour for advertisement purposes.
  • "Generation"- reference to the new generation and indie culture, and also power generation ('lights')
  • The album could simply be called 'Indigo lights'
  • "The Switch"
I will talk to the band about a title.

overall i like he theme of power and electricity (generation)

Casting

I was thinking of filming the entire film in, and outside a theatre, that can double up as a club. Here i could have access to llighting and hopefully the co-operation of the members of the theatre. This would mean i could cast the actual lead singer as the lead character.

Where do we run?-Shooting script

· (INT)Close up of a young man obviously very bored.
· (INT)A young man is sat at a table with many empty beer bottles and a large glass of water; he is fidgeting with the glass in a bored way.
· (INT)Action shot of him dipping his finger in the glass of water, he then brushes his finger around the rim of the glass, this creates a high pitched sound (opening sound of track)
· (INT)We then see a low angle shot of the man looking confused as he hears the guitars over the sound
· (INT)He gets up quickly and comically runs off to the left of the shot
· (EXT)He runs towards the shot outside the club in fast motion, his top half clothing is now a blue/Purple shirt, a guitar appears around his shoulder and he plays
· (EXT)He is seen, side on, reaching for a girl desperately but unable to move, trying to make himself run
· (EXT)Close up of him reaching (front on) looking really confused, he appears to be running
· (EXT)Wider shot to show his legs are not moving but his torso is trying to run
· (EXT)We see the man again, out of breath, close to the camera, in the background are some people of a similar age relaxing under a tree. They look at each other and point to him alarmed, they then vanish into the tree as he turns around, he looks back to the camera bemused.
· (EXT)Wide shot of an empty location with him in the centre, he looks upset and hangs his head.
· (EXT) Action shot of his mobile phone ringing, the screen says ‘my babe’
· (EXT)Shot of a Girl surrounded two boys, one wearing red and the other yellow, they are both trying to chat her up,and competing with each-other. She checks her phone and dismisses it
· (EXT)He gets angry and pitifully attempts to break his phone
· (EXT)Close up of the man, he is walking down the street dramatically singing the lyrics to the camera
· (INT)Cut to him sat on a stool in an empty location once more
· (EXT)Then the girl has him by his collar and is repeatedly slapping his face in time with the music
· (EXT)Shot of all three of the men running away down a long road
· (EXT)A series of photographs are shown of the man and his old Girlfriend Hugging and having fun, as they progress another boy in red pushes in and takes her away, he is left alone crying mellow-dramatically
· (INT)Cut to a ‘mosh pit’ type of crowd all enjoying themselves, he is standing central staring straight at the camera looking as if he is about to punch someone, he then pushes them all away and screams, he calms down, folds his arms and eventually walks out of shot.
· (EXT)A series of shots showing him running, these all fade over one another.
· (EXT)The final running shot, he looks into the camera and begins to sing the lyrics
· (EXT)Cliché’ shot of the yellow character and the girl skipping through a field in slow motion, he falls over but she carries on regardless, he eventually puts his head up and blinks confused.
· (INT)A calendar is shown with Things wrote down such as “eat pizza”, “watch telly” and “bum out”
· (INT)Darkness, three spotlights one after another blink on and off to show the girl in different poses
· (EXT)A montage of different angles of a guitar being played and crazy faces of the man
· (EXT)He waves his hands around fascinated with the ghost trails being created, he snaps out of it and begins to play his guitar trying to recover, end with a guitar close up
· (INT)We see a line of the three young men dancing stupidly in synchronisation
· (EXT)Side on shot of the blue man with his guitar singing aggressively to the girl
· (EXT)Action shot of girl shrugging in time to music
· (EXT)Cut to the girl running through the cliché’ field, yellow man runs into shot and pushes her over, he then skips off looking satisfied
· (INT)He is joining in with the dancers and they dance towards the camera to a beat
· (INT)“you don’t know”- Close up, he points to the camera aggressively and sings lyrics
· (INT)The same group of three dance side to side stupidly
· (EXT)Close up of the blue man, he pulls an evil, vacant face and the colours de-saturate and darken
· (EXT)He lets out a bolt of lightning from his hand and hits her with it, she falls down
· (EXT)Return to close up, he is laughing sinisterly, the colours return to normal
· (INT)Dance studio, he is to the side of the frame watching the dancers in the centre-right blankly, he eventually joins in hesitantly and they all encourage him, he becomes more and more exaggerated with his movement, eventually all of the dancers stop and he is left dancing alone, the dancers become aware of something to the right of the shot, one taps the man and points over to the right
· (INT)The shot is pointed at a doorway, it zooms quickly to show the girl, messy hair and black burnt face looking furious
· (INT)Camera cuts and turns to him, zooms to show his panic stricken face, on the final chord there is a hand that grabs his collar and pulls him toward the camera
· Blackout

“Where do we run?”- Lyrics

Verse 1

Why don’t you come over here?
I don’t know, I don’t know
You said you won’t disappear
You still go, you still go
And now I’m all on my own
I’m so low, I’m so low
Until you pick up the phone
And just say hello

Chorus

Where do we go now? Where do we run?
You left me with nothing yet I’m the one who’s always wrong
Where do we go now? Where do we run?
You left me with nothing yet I’m the one who’s always wrong
Give me a reason why you’ve left me on my own
You don’t know
We’ve wasted all this time now it’s blown out of control
Out of control
Give me a reason why you’ve left me on my own
You don’t know
We’ve wasted all this time now it’s blown out of control
Out of control

Verse 2

I was not expecting this
Is it true? Is it true?
All of these times that we’ve missed
Are we through? Are we through?
You said “My heart was for you”
It’s not true, it’s not true
And I’ve got nothing to do
Except think of you

(Chorus x2)
End.

Rough Storyboard

Some of the ideas i have may require certain software or experimentation, such as flight and running in space.

I have drawn up a concept/narrative based storyboard, and will try to scan them into blogger.

Storyboard starting ideas

The lyrics 'where do we go now?' gave me an idea of things vanishing around a central character. This would be a mid-way point between concept and narrative, i will produce a questionare to decifer how important these things are to the audience.
A possibility would be to use a dark room and play around with lighting, however i hope to use various effects using software such as 'imovie'

Ideas
  • Hide and Seek
I have a shot in mind in which the main character is central in the frame smiling stupidly, behind him you see his asumed friends lying on the grass below a tree. they suddenly get sucked up into the branches out of view, Character looks behind him then looks back with a sad face. this can be done by playing the shot in reverse. This refers to the lyrics 'Where Do We Go Now?'

  • Time passing
Can be done by setting up a camera and recording for a long time, central character either moves slowly or remains very still, then the shot is sped up on software.

  • Running
An obvious idea considering the song title, running away from someone or something such as a situation. This could be more possible to shoot if i had the use of imovie 09s' shot steadying feature or i made a make-shift steady-cam. A 'stori cam' could be used here.

  • Cutting to Marathon
Narrative could keep returning to an olympic marathon race (close up of character), character is exhausted but beside him is an upbeat girl taunting him.

  • Disappearing
'Give me a reason why you left me on my own', the idea of loneliness and loosing things. The main character would have to stay still between frames and i will cross-fade objects when they are there and when they are not.

  • Water
'Out of control', if i film a character jumping into a swimming pool then reverse it, it would create the effect of exploding and flying out from the water. I would then play this in slow-mo for emphasis

Effects experimentation

I have been playing with the idea of using some effect(using 'imovie') to create an almost cartoon look, for example increasing the contrast and altering the colours.

Here is a web page showing the features of a possible software at my use

http://gizmodo.com/5141657/imovie-09-review

it looks brilliant!

Music Video Brief

Artist
(previously 'Last Orderz')

"Indigo Lights"
The song i will be creating a promotional music video for is called "Where Do We Run"
Here is an existing video of the band posted on Youtube covering 'Dani California' by the Red Hot Chille Peppers...

I hope to promote the band by making a music video to post on youtube and other websites linking to the band. I shall create a youthful, artistic image for the band, something that keeps with the music genre but also something to highlight the unique qualities of the band such as Age and overall talent.

'Ready for the Floor'-Hot Chip Video Analysis

This is a frame i really like and directly link to the atmosphere of Hot Chip and the Electro-pop genre. The processed beats link to this slightly novelty machine, also this has relevance with the 'Joker' character. This scene involves close ups of the characters face and actions in accordance to the narrative.
This part of the video shows the band struggleing over strange shapes like some sort of game (relevance to Joker). This shows an element of struggleing or loss balance which mimic the odd music. This frame is another prime example of the primary coulors that make up the abstract world of Hot Chip.
This is a narrative structured frame which ties into the lyrics, the character is half Joker half normal and is uncontrolably dancing whilst trying to stangle himself thus surpressing the menacing side of himself.
This is an example of voyeuristic treatment of the female body aswell as the below image. This image is in keeping with the relevance of dualality and halves, possibly to do with the lyrics 'instead of carving up the wall, why dont you open up we talk?', the contrast between abnormality/madness and normality/sanity, the women half blend into the background invisaging a deeper meaning to the lyrics that may be open to interpretation.
This image continues the theme of colour and mimics the music itself, through moving parts and a somewhat unpredictablility this illustrated the 'techno' music aspect of 'Hot Chip' .

This frame, and the general theme of the music video, uses high contrast colours in accordance with the 'Electro-pop' genre. The costume of 'the joker' is worn but the lead singer, this is a reference to 'Batman' and is one of the most well known characters of all time, a playful yet sinister character wich links in with the genre and narative of the piece, this also mimics the music itself, the playful created sounds. The artists gets many close-ups introducing and establishing himself/themselves.
